Pelagic 14/10/2014

I went on a pelagic trip today aboard Sapphire. We went about 5 or 6 miles South of St Mary’s. It was quite slow going most of the day as it was quite calm with very little wind. We did have a few sightings of Storm Petrels whilst drifting here. Lines were put out to try and catch some Blue Shark but were unsuccessful. Later we went to the Poll Bank where there was a fleeting sighting of a Minke Whale and some Common Dolphin. We then headed back to St Mary’s via the Western Rocks. We also saw one Manx Shearwater, one Arctic Skua, one Bonxie, a couple of Squid and a Snipe that tried to land on the boat.

Mini Pelagic

12/10/2014  I spent the morning walking around St Mary’s where I saw the Richard’s Pipit on the golf  course and found a Yellow Browed Warbler near Pelistry. I also saw a Firecrest near Porthellick House. I then went on a mini pelagic trip which started by heading out to the Eastern Isles, then went south for a couple of miles before turning west. We saw a Balearic Shearwater, Arctic Skua and Great Skua. We then returned via the Western Isles where we saw a Purple Sandpiper on one of the rocks and then headed for Green Island where we saw the long staying Spoonbill.
