Cley & Salthouse

A great day out in Norfolk until heavy rain in the afternoon. I had gone to see the probable Stejneger’s Stonechat at Salthouse but decided to go for a seawatch at Cley first which was a good decision as there were lots of birds passing in the strong north westerly winds. Highlights were 2 Little Auk, juvenile Long-tailed Skua, 6 Pomarine Skua including one that landed on the beach and Long-eared Owl that flew in-off. There were lots of duck moving offshore, mainly Teal, Wigeon and Common Scoter but I also saw Pintail and a few Goldeneye. Two Snow Bunting flew past.

Then on to Salthouse where I eventually saw the possible Stejneger’s Stonechat well when it flew closer having originally been quite distant.

On the way out to sea between the islands we saw an Osprey, 6 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Common Scoter and Grey Plover. It was quite choppy out towards the Seven Stones reef and we did not stay out there too long. Best birds were a Pomarine Skua that was right next to the boat and a couple of Sooty Shearwaters. There were also 4+ Bonxie, Balearic Shearwater, Storm Petrel and an unusual record of a Snow Bunting that flew around us a couple of times.
