Galapagos 2024 – Part 1

A great trip to these amazing islands with my brother. We flew to Quito the capital of Ecuador via Amsterdam. We stayed three nights in Quito before flying onto the Galápagos Islands. We had a cultural tour of Quito one day and were quite surprised to be accompanied by two armed police officers for most of the day. The following day we went to the Cotopaxi reserve on a nature tour. We later found out that the security in Ecuador had become a bit of a problem and a curfew was brought into place whilst we were there. Luckily it did not really affect us whilst we were in Galapagos and it was only noticeable when we were in the airport on the way home, when we noticed a strong army presence and police offers with guns!

Some of the sights in Quito:

The following day was a trip to Cotopaxi Nature Reserve with a quick stop at a local market at Sangolqui.

Great Thrush

Andean Gull

Andean Lapwing

Blue-and-yellow Tanager

Our third day and we were on our way to the Galápagos Islands. We had to fly from Quito to Guayaquil and then onto the islands. We landed on Baltra Island and we were soon seeing some of the fantastic wildlife much of which is endemic to these islands. Before we had left the airport we had already seen Galapagos Dove, several Darwins finches and Iguanas.

Galapagos Dove

Roller

There was a fantastic Roller at Icklingham, Suffolk for about a week. I saw and photographed it on the 26/6/2021. It was quite distant early in the morning, in poor weather, but was much closer when I went back in the afternoon sun. Between these visits I went to Hickling Broad where there was a Collared Pratincole and 2 Black-winged Stilts.

Harlequin Duck 8/4/2013

Finally had a chance to see the Harlequin Duck that has been around since the 18/2/2013. As we had arrived on the boat the previous evening we were the only people looking for the bird this morning. It was spotted after about 10 minutes searching feeding about 200 yards offshore. It later came ashore on a rocky outcrop to preen and rest. Later we toured the Islands and saw 3 Golden Eagles, 8 Hen Harriers, 2 Merlin, 2 Short Eared Owls. There were 100’s of Greenland White Fronted Geese around the Islands along with 100’s of Redwings.

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Otter 30/3/2013

Went to Thetford Forest for the day. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker seen at around 8am at Santon Downham  in snow storm!!. It was a  female that was drumming and calling. A  Woodlark was seen at Mayday Farm and an Otter in Thetford. I have added a couple of low quality pictures of the woodpecker and a video where it can be seen it was snowing at the time. There is also a poor picture of the otter taken on my Iphone.
